- Deep Dish’s Yoshitoshi Records (and its sister label Shinichi) has established itself as one of the front running labels in the dance music industry. Having their 100th vinyl just released, the label now looks toward its well received “In House We Trust” mix series – currently on its third installment.
This time around, the popular compilation features Canada’s Luke Fair alongside England’s Desyn Masiello – two of dance music’s hottest up and coming jocks.
Disc one is mixed by Fair, who has established his name internationally by doing productions and remixes on labels ranging from John Digweed’s Bedrock, to Satoshi Tomiie’s Saw Recordings. In his native city of Toronto, Luke earned his reputation as the warm up DJ at the now defunct Industry Nightclub. He’s currently busy manning the decks in the city’s best nightclubs such as Guvernment and System Soundbar.
Fair’s mix begins by riding the housier side of progressive house. Heiko Laux’s “Dedicated to all Believers” mixes seamlessly into Lexicon Avenue’s “Here I Am (Deep Dub).” Brother Brown’s classic “Brotha Brotha” demonstrates the diversity of the Yoshitoshi/Shinichi catalog halfway into the first disc.
Autokat begins to rev things up with their remix of “Gimme the Beat”, before Fair takes a turn toward techno via Christian Smith & E.B.E. present Timeline’s “Clockwork Orange.”
The interchange of different genres throughout the mix demonstrates the Canadian’s ability to diversify his sound in a club setting, without losing the flow of the music. While being nothing more than a straightforward mix, disc one is guaranteed to get the party started during the ride to the club.
England’s Desyn Masiello steps up the decks for the second disc, demonstrating loads of creativity while working with the Yoshitoshi/Shinichi catalog. As co-owner of the outstanding label Sexonwax as well as founder of the magnificent Alternative Route, Desyn has earned huge respect both on the decks and behind the scenes.
DJ-wise, Masiello has garnered a reputation for his live-edits (ala Danny Tenaglia, Steve Lawler, etc…) and excellent track selection.
Desyn’s mix lives up to the hype. For the third track he layers Mysterious People’s “Fly Away” over Chiapet’s minimalist “Tick Tock.” Later he layers the highly recognizable accapella from Luzon’s “The Baguio Track” over Emily’s “Disco Bandit”, doing what he does best – taking two different records and creating a brand new sound.
David Alvarado’s older productions often go overlooked in the Yoshi catalog. However, his track “Passion Fruit” shows up half way through the mix, which paves the wave for Luke Chable’s excellent remix of PQM’s eerie club favorite, “You Are Sleeping.”
The only real drawback to Masiello’s mix would be opening with the vocal from Bernard Leon Howard III featuring 80’s “Marscarter.” The track (and/or accapella) has been featured on so many compilations (including the last “In House We Trust” release), that the mix could have easily done without it.
Regardless, both mixes are solid and the third installment of the series is arguably the best one to date. While some may claim that it’s quite arrogant for Yoshitoshi to release a double mix series based solely around its own releases, it is also a testament to the impact and staying power they have made in the realm of dance music and nightlife.
Both Luke Fair and Desyn Masiello are destined for the spotlight, with “In House We Trust 3” providing the proper platform.
