October - Planet of Minds

  • If you've ever been to a TANSTAAFL night, you'll know the atmosphere is a bit anything-goes. You'll hear pretty much everything under the sun, united by an old school rave spirit and the power of pure, jacking house. The brand's record label seems to be all about the latter, and its second release comes from co-owner October, who melts down his dubby and melodic sound into black tar bangers. The atmosphere in these tracks owes something to New Jersey deep house, but they groove with Berlin techno's frenzied ferocity. The beat on "Planet of Minds" is guttural, stomping on a squirming bassline with each brutal thrust. After such savagery, it initially looks like flipside "Singularity Jump" is a further eight minutes of fire-and-brimstone, but emerging between the blackened beats are stuttering vocal samples and, almost humourously, a glistening synth horn riff flown in from some forgotten Trax record. Triumphantly but comically bleating at the center of this post-apocalyptic ground zero techno, "Singularity Jump" proves that no matter how down-and-dirty he gets, October never runs out of surprises—or catchy hooks for that matter.
