Gabriel Ananda - Green

  • "Green" is the first of a limited series from Gabriel Ananda's Basmati label. It comes on a luscious green one-sided vinyl, with a Basmati logo etched on the back. The music itself follows in a similar vein to his recent Live Series. In other words: club-ready techno. It starts with a thick set kick drum, two quiet notes rising and falling repeatedly and an intricate mass of clicking. Then comes an acid line, of the muted, gently whooping variety before the midrange is cut and the bass is dropped after the breaks. Needless to say, it doesn't play by any radically new rules. If you keep an eye on Gabriel Ananda generally, though, you'll know that this doesn't often lead to Yawnsville. His tracks may be filled with proven production tropes, but they've also been Ananda-ized and heave with character. "Green" is no different. The kick is quite a lot more elephantine than you'd expect. The harmonies in the background have a soft, pastel kind of character, giving the track a sensitivity that belies its hardness. The mass of clicking is wonkily quantized, and each of the hits has a weight and woody texture of its own. Sure, the acid line is just an acid line, but it doesn't matter by that point. This is acid techno with a twist.
