- Since 2006, Patrice Scott and his Sistrum label have been synonymous with deep house. But while the chords and tempos all match that description, the Detroit-based producer's music feels far too expansive to be fully captured by the term. Orbital Bliss, the name of Scott's latest Sistrum EP, sums up his sound much better, and its four tracks play appropriately to type.
Scott admittedly hasn't strayed much from his home galaxy over the course of his discography, but the Orbital Bliss EP is evidence that there's a wealth of galactic curiosities still to be uncovered. Beginning with "Tones & Things," a semi-beatless statement of purpose, Scott quickly dives into the sort of enormously atmospheric, rhythmically hard-hitting jam he's known for with "Oberon." The EP's title cut dials things back a bit, perhaps exploring the nooks and crannies of some lonesome asteroid. But on his "ReChord Version" of "Orbital Bliss," he revs his engines again, sliding deftly into the sinewy space between house and techno. New recruits will certainly find much sonic richness to pore over, but even those well versed in Patrice Scott's singular space journey will find reasons to hitch a ride.
