Mono Electric Orchestra - Blunt Force Trauma

  • Blunt Force Trauma is Barry Jamieson's debut record under the Mono Electric Orchestra moniker, and follows an appearance on Henry Saiz's Balance CD last year. The eponymous cut pairs the kind of dreamscape melody John Beltran might concoct with wallowing pads and slow-pulled elastic strings. If at first the music seems at odds with the title, imagine it soundtracking that clichéd movie moment where the hero is knocked out and everything slows to a stupefied, blissful montage. Makes more sense, now, right? Sporting a circa 2006 minimal slant, Max Cooper's remix is more beat-oriented, but still rather languid. Proving that drastic alterations aren't always necessary, its fewer melodies and balsa-light rhythms work just fine. The more anthemic "Lunar Cycle" attempts to woo with an unusual warbling synth line and some disappointingly familiar tricks, such as white noise clap builds. Leaving glowing trails behind―like a sparkler waggled in the dark―it loops and ping-pongs over jittery percussion, ultimately chasing its own impressive tail for a little too long.
