Kareem - How Low Can You Go

  • Fresh off the back of Republican Enemy with Oskar Offermann, Kareem Hafiz returns to Platte International asking, How Low Can You Go? As with that record, tough house is the order of the day, all three cuts favouring ascetic percussive rhythms over bassline-led grooves. Hafiz' eponymous piece is up first. It's one of those things which, by most measures, shouldn't be very interesting at all, but somehow works its way into your heart anyway. Its defining tropes―a raucous, jacking beat and amiable synth stabs―are hardly fresh, but their smart arrangement and articulate voices add up to classic earworm material. Interestingly, Offermann's version is somewhat of a mirror image. Endowed with a sleek cadence and choppy stabs, it manages to reach similarly catchy heights. But the real reason to buy the record is the B-side, "Angry Birds." Possessed with an expansive reverbed beat, it marches on for close to 12 minutes, casually striding up and down the scale via forbidding symphonic strings. Wary of losing attention, Hafiz never cuts the beat once, instead using a smudgy pad to lighten the mood between bouts of gloom. It's a long, slow rollercoaster ride; one which you won't want to stop.
