Wasserfall - Thursday

  • Now onto his third EP for Greta Cottage Workshop, Norwegian producer Wasserfall continues to ply a similar brand of house to that of Christopher Rau. In "Thursday," simple mellifluous chimes skip back and forth across the spectrum, dipping in and out of the blurry collage that lurks behind them. This indistinct backdrop of tinny, jangling metal and gusting synths smooths out all the track's boundaries, fostering a warm, inviting atmosphere. "Unwind" does exactly as it says, assuming a cool, jazzy stance with the aid of restrained vibraphone, sparsely-placed guitar chords and a demure female croon. "Untitled (GCW Made Me Do It)" takes it a step further, slackening the pace to a weary shuffle and pulsating with pretty chords. It feels non-committal, both asking and expecting nothing, delivering its soothing sequences with apathy. "Tuwa" is characterised by similarly serene motifs, but this time woody rimshots and a rambling bassline up the intensity just slightly. Though it's the most upbeat track on Thursday, it never quite manages to break free of the sluggish, early morning mood. And who would want it to?
