Luciano Esse - Green EP

  • For his debut release on Berlin's Out-er, Luciano Esse presents a trio of unnervingly paranoiac tracks, seemingly positioned to trigger both your fight and flight impulses. Green kicks off with "Foul," which is probably the most strait-laced of the three. Off-key warbles flirt with a simple yet effectively forceful lumbering bass gallop. A flicker of dread is provided by a submerged, submarine pulse that punctuates the gloom at regular intervals throughout the middle third of the track. "The Laziest Man" sets off with a bass groove so similar it could almost be an extension of "Foul," but then an overwhelming cacophony of harshly brushed metal that dips and weaves arrives, sucking you in and overwhelming you completely. Darker still is "Black Stick," which may take a little longer than is necessary to make its point, but varied hats and percussion provide a reasonably interesting distraction while it draws breath. When it finally reveals its apocalyptic, world-destroying pad—made all the more ominous by harshly filtered vocals and fingernails-on-chalkboard fizzes—it's certainly got your attention.
