Brandub - Bank Side

  • Although Brandub's debut EP could justly be accused of suffering from a slight identity crisis, that's precisely what makes it such an intriguing listen. Take opener "Procesos" for instance: It never really decides whether it's dub techno, deep house, or even dubstep, but incorporating elements from all three makes for an engaging six-or-so minutes. Shuffling hats are probably the most consistently prominent element, but hiding just below the surface lays a quietly bubbling pool of viscous low-end that's only too willing to envelop anything that comes within its oily grasp. "Writhing Dub" is more distinctly formed, a solid house groove helped along its way by lettuce-crisp snares and hats. But like its predecessor, the track remains deeply atmospheric, allowing you to lose yourself in its melodically echoing recesses without forgoing the chance to throw the odd fist pump or two. Beat Pharmacy's reimagining heads for a significantly darker crevice, creating something creepingly ominous from relatively innocent parts. Don't expect any relief from the tension either. The closest thing to a drop is a metallic synth arcing into full view while the rest of the track momentarily drops away. Other than that, it's pleasantly uncomfortable angst all the way.
