Kris Wadsworth & Butane - Present Team America

  • "Slam Dunk" and "Surprise Party" revel in their lack of sophistication. The former is an urgent, relentless piece of linear tracheotomy, the latter a little more discreet with some urgent percussion. Both are funk—in a house context—personified. "69" is a little more varied and restrained, but just as elemental. The breakbeats that move above the subdued keys keep the tone subdued, but that's simply the calm before the storm. Like the other two tunes, "69" is a bridge to other places, a moment of calibration in a set that may best be understood in a supporting role. Releases like this are the aural equivalent of middle America, with the greatest respect to the artists involved. They exhibit a lack of pretension, coupled with a balls-deep knowledge of what works a floor. Messrs Butane and Wadsworth should be congratulated for their honesty and lack of bullshit, as well as their competence.
