Tunnidge - Aftershock

  • Londoner Tunnidge is the kind of dubstep producer who gives tracks titles like "Aftershock" and "Face Melt," but don't get him confused with the aggro junkies that have run rampant with the genre: Tim Langridge is a devout disciple of Distance-style dubstep, ten-tonnes-heavy without the fratboy tendencies. Like Tunnidge's best (especially last year's stellar remix of Truth's "Puppets"), "Aftershock" has the feeling that it's violently throwing itself on the ground in some horrifying fit of flagellation. Completely ruthless, the snares hit like knockout punches, and when the beat skips three times at the end of the bars, it's a brutal finishing blow. Langridge has a knack for the much-abused LFO, and it courses through "Aftershock" like coagulated blood, unpleasant but spectacularly powerful in its caustic gurgling. Centering around what sounds like glass knocking against glass, "Blame" is a straightforward roller with tense speech samples and eerie strings. Though the song's one-two-punch kick pattern carries an impact more powerful than most, it's a fairly pedestrian affair especially in comparison to the brutal pyrotechnics of "Aftershock."
