Troy Gunner - Mindset009

  • "Heady" would be the best descriptor for Indigo's Mindset Records, a label which in its compacted history has coaxed early dubby cuts from Kowton (as Narcossist), xxxy and even churning dupstep duo 16bit. "Girl" off Synkro's Look at Yoursef EP departed some way from the stable's usual formula, but it's with 19-year-old Troy Gunner that Mindset have really turned a corner. Fool's Gold is still a "thinker," with three tracks made for the home listeners in mind, but on the whole feels a lot lighter—dare I say fun?—compared to the rest of the catalogue, thanks to the Joe-esque pallet of samples and garage flecks throughout. While the proliferation of manmade sounds here—including coughing, claps and slurping noises—make this an instantly interesting EP, its melodic undercarriage leaves the lasting impression. "Fool's Gold," for example, despite its hiccupping arrangement is seriously catchy. Even song-like. "Heads in Hands" is much sparser, as it spits serenely into a lazy lounger. "Dancing in the Leaves" concludes with the hookiness of "Fool's Gold" and luscious pads of "Heads in Hands" on a bright shuffly note that has me thinking we'll be hearing more from this thoughtful young producer as the year progresses. As for Mindset, here's hoping this is the start of a slightly more jovial chapter for the label. We shall see.
