- As his significant other project, PBR Streetgang, continues to flourish, Bonar Bradberry returns to Needwant for a second solo outing. And frankly, with production skills as polished and pristine as these, it's no wonder he's keen to release as much as he can: almost every sound he lays down glistens and shimmers with a shiny disco heat impossible to ignore.
The man's got a good grasp of groove too, with both original tracks offering infectious hip-swinging delights of the sort anyone from Greg Wilson to Tensnake would surely devour. "You Were Away" layers shakers, hand claps, indie-licked bass notes and steamy spoken word vocals into a dynamic nu-disco fusion that, importantly, holds enough back to keep it from being as saccharine and exhaustingly "up" as much of this stuff can be. The edgier "Lip Therapy" has nagging minor bass notes which keep things grounded despite the rousing synths and scurrying percussion all around. Later on there's even a slightly nasty acid line to add some dirt into an arrangement which otherwise radiates like the sun's hottest summer rays. As well as an instrumental version, German trio Space Ranger strip back "You Were Away" to its component parts before rebuilding it with more urgency and less dazzle, where Maxxi Soundsystem goes all out with his diva tinged "Lip Therapy" re-rub. It's unashamedly uplifting and, as a result, is the one that stays with you the longest.
