David August - You Got to Love Me

  • We're not going to draw comparisons between 21-year-old Hamburg house producer David August and the likes of Mozart or Barenboim, that'd be damn silly. That said, for someone of such tender years, he certainly has a grown-up style. For starters, there's none of the crash-bang-wallop you often associate with someone barely out of their teens. Instead, it's subtlety and solemnity that come to the fore on August's third sojourn for his hometown Diynamic label. "You Got to Love Me" is the only track here that really sets its controls fully for the dance floor, and even then there's melancholia stalking the slapped congas, gently acidic bassline and disco clicks. "On My Mind" revels in some soulful analogue pop giddiness, with drums that sound like they're having the breath squeezed out of them; best of the lot is "Stepping Through Myself," a slice of liquid digital blues with a murderous bassline that prods you in the ribs and gnaws you in the ear with its eerie vocal hook. It all adds up to three bits of intelligent dance music, in the original sense of the phrase.
