Ion Ludwig - Believe Born Again

  • I don't think I was alone in much preferring the stretchy deep house of "Timeless Thing" to the techier "Background Be" from Ion Ludwig's last EP. Happily, it seems the German himself agrees, or so you might infer from this new, tranquilized three tracker for Tenth Circle. In fact, each track is so lethargic, they unfold rather like a time-lapse camera shot: sparse percussive sounds, rich trumpet notes and subtle speech samples are all strung out in the vast gaps between kicks making for oh-so languorous, long and lazy grooves. That the man is a jazz and acoustic fan is no real surprise. Everything meanders at its own pace, and there's an almost yawning architecture to the sounds. Sunday afternoon stroller "Iony M" has cavernous kicks, laissez-faire sampling and a generally unhurried air, while "Slowion" pairs a looped, wobbly hook with more ploddy and introspective deep house grooves. As those two main elements roll on, various trumpet notes, horns and chords fade in and out of focus, drawing you back in whenever your mind begins to wander. Closer "Believe Born Again" is similarly elongated, but instead of disappearing down to bottomless depths, it extends outwards onto some heady cosmic plane thanks to its swirling pads and sweet soaring sax notes. Because it's defined by such devilish restraint (at all times it's a case of just enough but not too much) you'll need patience to enjoy this EP. The results, though, are delicious.
