Background Sound - Close EP

  • Sparse, electronic, soul music with heavy dubstep and deep house influences characterise the debut from New York duo Albert Hernandez and Andrew Siedenburg. "Close" is the one, floating on an ocean of atmospheric bass rumbles, pinging rimshots and otherworldly female vocal excerpts; it rather overshadows the wonky garage flourishes of "Good By You" in comparison. The package is beefed up by three deconstructions of "Close," including a remarkable take from one of the UK underground's big breakthrough artists of 2011 (if that's not a tautology), Blue Daisy. The Camden producer invites you into the broad, sweeping plains of his mind. Using merely a dash of the original's vocal, knocked back into the very far distance, you will hear the crackle of vinyl, cascades of reverb and sonic urban experimentalism that gets you in a headlock. Faintly disturbing in a highly enjoyable way. Lapalux, part of FlyLo's Brainfeeder empire, sandwiches low-end bass with skippity, speeded up vocals and fidgety percussion (it's a big sandwich, so consume slowly). Finally, Join The Dots' very own Duffstep winds in some future 2 step business to "Close," playing fast and loose with tempo at every available opportunity before a molar-rearranging bassline lands feet first in the middle, and off it gambols. A potent mix of the melancholy and funky.
