SW. - Reminder Part Three

  • In our Label of the month feature from earlier this year, SVN described his partner, SW., as "the techno side of SUED." SVN, who is essentially uninterested in dance music, makes rippling compositions that mostly elude categorization. SW.'s records, however, are directly inspired by classic house and techno—"a reminder of the good things from Detroit, Chicago and the other British stuff," as he put it, hence the title of his Reminder series. In a way, that sells it short—even at his most conventional, SW. is still more fresh and singular than most house and techno acts out there. Reminder Part Three is a case in point, with two IDM-style tracks alongside two lush house cuts. Each side seems to present two alternate takes on the same idea. The A-side has an air of Monolake's Hongkong to it, with soothing pads and busy, chaotic rhythms, all laid over a bed of found sounds (radio noise on the A1, rain on the A2). On the B-side we get two exquisitely off-kilter house grooves, each with stuttering rhythms, mellow chords and a kind of balmy sunset atmosphere. The first is more high-impact, thanks to a whopper of a kick drum, while the second is a bit floatier. Both are among the best tracks this artist and label have put out so far.
