  • There's nothing original about the idea of remixing Sade. The English band has been widely loved for decades, and its frontwoman, Sade Adu, sings with a dark sensuality that's perfect for club music. Sure enough, she's found her way onto countless edits and remixes over the years, authorized and unauthorized, by everyone from Ben Watt to Kenny Larkin to Late Nite Tuff Guy. But in spite of all that, it's hard not to fall for SAD Edits 001, a black-label EP not so secretly by Florian Kupfer, distributed by OYE records in Berlin. The A-side takes "I Couldn't Love You More," a slow jam from 1992's Love Deluxe, and layers it over one of Kupfer's brisk and grubby house beats. This is the same contrast that made 2013's "Feelin" such a hit: dirty and imperfect, but also warm and groovy. Throw in Sade's smoky croon and you've got an addictive vocal house bomb that's destined to be a go-to final track all summer (assuming it doesn't get overplayed too quickly). The B-side reinterprets "Never Thought I'd See The Day," whittling down the source material to just the smooth rock keys (which sound quite FXHE-ish in this context) and one haunting line, sung as if from a great distance: "I wish you could shelter me, shelter me now..." It's understated compared the A-side, but certainly holds its own. Like most pop edits, the record is a lark, but one that keeps drawing you back in.
