Jasper James - Sneaky

  • As the son of legendary Subculture resident Harri and the flatmate of Jackmaster, Glasgow producer Jasper James could probably have found a way into electronic music even if his talents had been limited. This debut EP for Optimo's floor-focused Optimo Traxx label is unequivocal proof that no nepotism was required. All three of James's productions on Sneaky are bumping, bass-heavy house jams with the power to turn one's mind towards going out on the most mundane of midweek evenings. The best of the bunch is "V Moog," a irresistible, menacing combination of lurching, classic R&S-style bass, echoing vocals and tumbling percussion. "Listen To My Buttons" pairs a dramatic bassline with thunderclap cymbals and cinematic pads, while the title track is a hugely funky blend of quick, skittering low notes, clacking drums and '90s vocal snippets. All have atmosphere to burn, and all are more confident than the tracks on a debut release have any right to be. The package is rounded out by Harri and Auntie Flo's Esa, who under their Hillhead Young Team guise take "V Moog" into perkier, sharper territory.
