Palms Trax - Forever

  • Berlin-based producer Palms Trax first emerged with last year's neo-Chicago-styled Equation EP. With it, he inaugurated Lobster Theremin, a label that's almost exclusively dealt in hazy, flavour-of-the-month house and techno since. Now almost ten releases in, nothing that's followed on Lobster Theremin has matched the high standard set by Palm Trax's maiden effort, particularly its well-known title track. The Englishman is back on the label with Forever, a quality 12-inch that gives DJs a bit more to chew on than his first. Another ambitious title track gets Forever underway. It's dense, fast-paced and slightly darker than the rest of the Palms Trax catalogue. Those with the dance floor in mind need look no further than "Raw Jam." It does exactly what it says on the tin, with big drums and loopy, crunchy keys combining for what should be a weapon in any house DJ's bag (if they're willing to contend with a tricky intro). The electro-tinged "Lost Control" features another feel-good melody, a characteristic that's becoming a Palms Trax hallmark. A lazy rework from Galcher Lustwerk closes things out. What's meant to be a standard deep house tool seems phoned-in, and is really at odds with the rest of the package.
