Rhythmic Theory - Decadence Of Delay

  • 2013 was a good year for Rhythmic Theory. A pair of singles saw the anonymous Bristolian(s) blast the cobwebs out of their classically-informed techno sound, leaving behind rough'n'tumble drum tracks (in the case of BRSTL single "Siren Song") and exceptional jungle-informed rollers ("Legacy Of The Lost" on Idle Hands). Their latest, for Happy Skull—the label run by DJ's DJs The Kelly Twins—continues to fly the flag for techno in the largely house-oriented Bristol scene, but once again the stylistic goalposts have been shifted. As for where they've been shifted to, somewhere in the Midwest is probably a safe guess. "Decadence of Delay" plays on a Detroit-style juxtaposition of aqueous chords and extreme aggression, thundering along close to 140 BPM. Whipcrack electro number "Endocrine Creatures," meanwhile, offers an equally technoid vision of the future, all metallic android voices and scorched 303s. Both could have emerged from the lab of DJ Stingray, which makes this single a bit of a backwards step for a producer (or producers) who seemed to be developing a distinctive, decidedly British sound. But perhaps that's unfair; just like their anonymous creator, these tracks don't demand special recognition—they simply get the job done.
