- Ali Wells' love of industrial music has recently bubbled through his records like a hot spring, occasionally finding explosive release in tracks like "A New Brutality," but more often giving things a more subtle, sulphur-tinged scent. He likely feels the pressure of making music for the dance floor, and understandably so. But now, with the launch of his new sub-label, Submit, Wells has looked to free himself from these expectations, with an EP that reworks long-lasting industrial pioneers Einstürzende Neubauten.
For all this freedom, though, Wells seems a touch too close to the source material to make an impact on it. Tackling the dub mixes of their classic Kollaps album, he works with a light touch: "Rivieradub"'s rhythms get beefed up, the factory-reggae lope of "Liebesdub" is cloaked in dread-heavy reverb and trippy echo, and he bolsters the train-track percussion of "Lünebest" with start-stop pads, grunts and crackling distortion. But, as Wells told RA, he wanted to work "without feeling like I was unnecessarily adding sounds to already complete tracks." Interpretations is a revealing and multi-textured listen, but it will be more interesting to see how Wells' industrial leanings emerge when unbound from his respect for industrial's pioneers.
