Dave DK - Palmaille

  • After a decade of regular releases on the likes of Moodmusic, Television Records and Playhouse, Berlin producer Dave DK makes an overdue debut on Kompakt, a label whose strong melodic sensibilities dovetail neatly with his own. It's notable that each of the three cuts here fit into a different strand of the Cologne label's output: the early Total compilations, the Pop Ambient series and the Kompakt Pop sublabel respectively. The title track marries a couple of sweet and sleepy vocal loops to warming strings and clicking percussion, producing the kind of gently humming piece of techno balladry on which the label's name was built. "Nakai (Pop Ambient Version)" is, as you might expect, a beatless warm bath of a track, blending chiming keys with swathes of ambient bass and effects. Poppy closer "Home Again" features guest vocals from Heiko Voss (of "I Think About You" fame) and his contribution takes another typically Kompakt framework and turns it into something resembling (in a very positive way) a Superpitcher remix of Cut Copy. It took some time for them to find each other, but Kompakt and Dave DK are a perfect match.
