Joey Anderson - Above The Cherry Moon

  • Set up by Oliver Bristow as a sub-label of Absurd Recordings, Avenue 66 lands with the intention of showcasing "weird, left-of-centre house and techno." Who, then, could be better placed for the first release than Joey Anderson, one of the scene's trippiest producers? "Above The Cherry Moon" is certainly leftfield, splicing Ebony Ugo's sung and spoken vocals over an intense bed of imperfect techno. The fusion of Ugo's tender utterances with the track's dark, stuttered rhythm is engaging, made all the more so by a late influx of synths. Vakula, another far-out house artist, sticks by Anderson's choppy composition, while enveloping its greyscale feel within a softer veil. Though more emotive, some of the impact of the original is lost. "Auset" sees Anderson on a different tack, leading with zealous techno synths before launching into a closing storm of improvised keys. It's as riled up and punchy as we've him, and it rounds off a heady debut for Avenue 66.
