Leon Vynehall - Brother / Sister

  • Leon Vynehall represents the odder side of the UK house new school. By which I mean that, compared to the likes of Dusky and Bicep, his taste for subtly stumbling grooves and the mucky hi-hats makes him something of a sonic guerilla. Since his emergence last year, though, Vynehall seems to have been gradually reigning in his more wayward tendencies, zeroing in on a bigger-room sound that will doubtless have broader appeal, even if its specifics are rather less exciting. In this regard his Aus debut, Brother / Sister, is probably his most successful release yet. It's certainly lacking in the confrontational weirdness of, for example, "Gold Language," and the balmy downtempo numbers that closed the Rosalind and Mauve EPs for Well Rounded Housing Project are noticeably absent. Instead we are presented with two bold, melodically forthright 'floor-fillers in the best Aus tradition. "Sister," with its muted organ chords, is rather lacklustre. But "Brother" is better: a brash, peaktime piano house number that throbs and wheezes under the strain of its swooping bassline.
