- Sex Tags Mania co-founder DJ Sotofett has never disguised his affection for Roland's TR-909; one of the label's early releases was nothing more than a single loop of a 909 kick drum, cut as a lock groove smack dab in the middle of a one-sided 12-inch. (Produced to accompany an art exhibition, the record may be something of a conceptual lark, but its tribute to one of techno's cornerstones seems sincere.) The Drittfett EP finds the Norwegian DJ and producer expanding on his love for the iconic machine. Analog synthesizers round out the palette, but the 909 remains at the core of all five tracks.
The A1 (all tracks are untitled) stakes out a position somewhere between Slam's "Positive Education" and LFO's "LFO," with stubby, recalcitrant bass stabs smoothed over by watery chords; another synth (or maybe a sample of one) crinkles in the background like cellophane, adding to the scratchy sense of rave nostalgia. The A2 is far more understated, with an MK-inspired organ bassline tumbling headlong down the stairs; the crisp hi-hat work and background atmospherics make the track sound like an eccentric cousin to Smallville's in-house style. The flipside's three tracks are darker and tougher, with bursts of 909 snares in almost liquid streams, as from a firehose; of particular note is the B2, with its lush, Detroit-inspired chords and tough, metallic bleeps that wouldn't sound out of place on a Rephlex record circa '93.
