Arthur Oskan - Wants & Needs EP

  • Operating from Detroit, Brian Kage's Berettamusic has a commendably restrained release schedule. Including its two sub-labels, Grey and Red, there have been just 25-odd records since its birth in '03. Kage seems to have a strict―if narrow―policy music-wise, and his labels are all the better for it. Wants & Needs illustrates this point well enough. Completely smothered with burnished chords, Arthur Oskan's original cut glides forward as if on silk-covered tracks. The whole thing just sings; a synth choir in perfect unison. Central to this feeling are the massive, shimmering pads which rise up and loom over the rest of the track like an impending tsunami. Oskan never lets the waves hit, instead quelling them to reflective breakdowns. Dub techno producer Luke Hess calms these watery behemoths further, turning them into pulsing currents. That's not to say this is really much of a dub track though; only that Hess' past informs it. Thankfully, he's kept Oskan's super-sharp hats, mixing in a splashing ride cymbal to lather the whole thing into a heady madness. Truthfully, it would be a tough to choose a favourite between this restless version or the blissful original.
