  • Chippy Nonstop's career is a lesson in perseverance and hard work. Known early on for a raucous sound that blended hip-hop, trap and EDM, she was already on her way to being a star when she was unceremoniously banned from the US, where she lived, because of an expired visa. With literally nowhere to go, she moved her life to Vancouver, then Toronto, where she started to pivot to DJing over live performing. (Though, as anyone has seen her play will attest, her style of DJing is a performance itself.) After relocating to Canada, Chippy started the multi-city Intersessions collective, a then-groundbreaking initiative to teach women and non-binary people how to DJ, give them access to musical resources and help them learn about navigating the music industry. It would be no exaggeration to say that Intersessions changed the dance music landscape in Canada—and beyond—and the fruits of the crew's labours are obvious in the country's increasingly and vibrant music scene to to this day. While it would be easy to go on about Chippy's community-minded work, we're here to talk about her DJing. Over the years, and especially over the pandemic, she's sharpened a sound that folds her rowdy energy into techno and breakbeat, as you'll hear here. Swift, energetic and heavy without feeling leaden or oppressive, Chippy is one of those people that can play ultra-hard techno and make it sound nimble, almost light on its feet, with hints of other uptempo genres—jungle, footwork—thrown in for extra panache. She describes it as "chaotic energy as always," but it's more than that. It's aerodynamic, funky and uplifting. What are you grateful for these days? Being able to rave with all my friends and be out of lockdown.  How and where was the mix recorded? And can you tell us the idea behind it? In my house at 4 AM, as usual. Chaotic energy as always, high energy as always.  It feels like your musical direction has become more techno-focused and even harder, especially since the pandemic hit. What drove or inspired this shift? Through the pandemic I was listening to a really hard music of all kinds to feel something. And I was just gravitating to a lot harder sounds. I've always been into high energy fast-paced dance music. I also just wanted to take up space in the techno world, because I think it needs to be shaken up.  As a cofounder of Intersessions, you've been a pioneer in working towards access for women and non-binary people in the electronic music industry. Have things changed for the better since you started that project in 2016, and what would you like to see change further? For me it has changed because I focus my energy on helping people within my community versus focusing on the barriers. There's still the same old bullshit, but when you focus your energy on growing and helping those around you grow it definitely helps.  What are you looking forward to in the near future? I'm excited to see more Black and brown artists take more space in dance music and be on the stages they deserve to be on, getting paid what they deserve to be paid.  What's one social or political cause you want the world to pay more attention to? Just one? Lmao. Something specifically in music is as the ecosystem in techno and dance music changes and more queer, women, Black people and POC are getting booked in these spaces, promoters and bookers need to be more aware of our safety and take into consideration how it feels to be in rooms as a minority, it's not enough to just book us. There is more work to be done.  The cause I would like to highlight is a studio / venue space that will be one of the first Black-owned trans venues in Canada. My friend Syana is trying to raise money to open a space and I would like to support her endeavors. She is talented and hard-working and Montreal creatives deserve this space.
