  • If you've been keeping your ear to the ground for hot new house and disco records over the last couple of years, then you'll probably find that the work of Graeme Clark has been somewhat inescapable. His edits of Stevie Wonder, Unfinished Business and Hot Chocolate for celebrated edits imprint Jiscomusic made sure that The Revenge had pride of place in many a disco DJ's crate, and he's managed to back it up with recent original productions and remixes, both solo and alongside collaborators such as Craig Smith. The dubby deep house of "The Soul Part II" has been tearing up dancefloors internationally for the last few months, but Clark certainly isn't new to the production game. After fiddling around with a couple of his father's drum machines and a sampler during the '90s, Clark found that he needed an outlet to release his creations, and hence started the Five20East label with brothers Scott and Ross Langley. Be it electro-house, UK garage, or just plain ol' house music, Five20East has featured it all, and Clark's production remit is just as diverse. Having recently reprised his studio partnership with Sub Club legend DJ Harri, the duo proceeded to put out a trippily jacking tech-houser in the form of "Space Doubt"-a world away from Clark's funky disco material. It's the latter sound that he's focused on for this week's RA podcast, however, mixing up exclusive new material with tracks from Mark E, Charles Earland and Nitro Deluxe. We caught up with Graeme to ask him about the mix, his productions, and his headlining performance at this month's Shoplifter party in London. What have you been working on recently? New stuff for Mule Musiq, Delusions Of Grandeur, Z Records, Under The Shade, Freerange, Future Classic and Home Taping Is Killing Music, plus new Instruments Of Rapture & Five20East stuff. Loads of labels I love dearly, basically. I'm also doing some mastering for Fine Art Recordings and Under The Shade. Where and how was the mix recorded? Recorded in my basement studio using Rane Serato on two Technics 1210's with an Allen & Heath mixer. Can you tell us a little idea about the mix? I had a few hours before I was due to fly out to Moscow with Mark E for a couple of gigs and I really needed to get a new mix done. I'd already collected together about 100 possible tracks for the RA mix, but that all went out the window and I really just threw this one down in an hour but I think it represents me fairly well. It always seems like heavy nepotism when I do these mixes, but I tend to make a lot of versions of things to fit into the way I play out when I'm DJing. My own personal tool belt if you will. You've had a prolific run of releases of late. Is it 8 this year? Where do you want to go with your production work? There's been a few-it's been a busy year. I've always been a producer first and I'm just really enjoying having the opportunity to work with labels whom I have a lot of respect for-so just being able to do that is great. There's no masterplan. You're playing for Shoplifter at the end of this month. Are you doing more DJ gigs? Yeah-I'm looking forward to it. I'm doing a lot more gigs this year and being on Warm Agency has helped as it has a strong roster with a lot of artists who's productions and performances I really enjoy. What are you up to next? Putting together the new L.E.S.S. Productions CD compilation, more DJing and more production. Long may it continue!
