  • Henrik Schwarz's roots are in house, but it didn't take him long to look beyond the sound for inspiration. Soon after a life-changing experience at a classical music concert, the veteran German producer began to incorporate orchestral elements into his beats, becoming one of the key artists bridging those two worlds. He's also produced some of the biggest house tracks of recent years, including his anthemic rework of "Ene Nyame 'A' Mensuro," a 1980 funk track by the Ghanaian artists Pat Thomas & Ebo Taylor. The remix is a quintessential Henrik Schwarz tune, laying horns, vocals and swirling melodies over the kind of easygoing beat that could only come from an artist at one with the dance floor. His catalogue is full of tracks like this, blending dance music's endless groove with the instruments and melodies of orchestras. Ahead of the release of his latest album, Scripted Orkestra, we invited Schwarz to RA's Berlin office for a chat about his career so far. In conversation with Matt Unicomb, he looked back at his formative years as a resident DJ in Southern Germany, broke down his live setup and detailed his fascination with classical music.
