  • XL Recordings has been described as the perfect middle ground between an independent label and a major—it has the spirit and integrity of the former, but offers its artists the resources of the latter. This is something Richard Russell, one of its founders and its owner, seems particularly proud of. Since 1989, he's guided the label from releasing club music 12-inches for DJs, to later signing some of the most respected mainstream artists of the modern era. XL has now arrived at a place where releasing music by artists like Adele and Powell in the same year makes total sense. There are many factors that have gone into this, but Russell's simple, unwavering passion for music seems to be high among them. He takes artistic independence and integrity extremely seriously, and says that an artist's commercial potential is of low priority to the label. The last couple of years have seen Russell step away from the day-to-day operations at XL to focus on his long-term ambition: to become a recording artist himself. Russell's recent production work for Gil Scott-Heron, Bobby Womack, Damon Albarn and Ibeyi has since led to Everything Is Recorded, a highly collaborative project that will release a debut album early this year. As Russell explained to RA editor Ryan Keeling late last year, the project was kicked into gear by an event that brought his life grinding to a halt.
