  • Brazilian police have announced new developments regarding the 2022 murders of British reporter Dom Phillips, former editor at Mixmag during the '90s, and Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira. The Guardian reported the news today, June 5th, citing a federal police indictment on the matter. Ruben Dario da Silva Villar, who Brazilian officials called a leader of an illegal fishing network that operated between Brazil, Colombia and Peru, was charged with ordering the murders and concealing the bodies. His associate Jânio Freitas de Souza was charged with participating in both crimes. A year ago, Phillips and Pereira went missing in the Amazon rainforest while reporting on Indigenous efforts to protect land from illegal fishers and miners. Their bodies were eventually found and three fishers were imprisoned on suspicion for the killings, according to the Guardian. Read the Guardian's report for more details. Photo Credit: the Guardian
