  • Phonon 4400s may soon be available again. The headphones celebrated by DJs including Jeff Mills, Dixon, Âme, Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig were originally released in 2018 but were discontinued after two years. They are sturdy, light and foldable but use the same 40mm driver as Phonon's SMB-02s, which are professional-grade studio monitors that have been hailed as the "Holy Grail of headphones" by The New York Times. All 4400s are tuned by Isao Kumano, Phonon's president, and a leading mastering engineer in Japan, celebrated for his sound system designs. The headphones, an updated version of the 4000s that Resident Advisor reviewed back in 2016, are known for delivering clear, powerful bass with no muddiness, which makes them ideal for use in clubs. The Kickstarter launched on May 28th, looking for a target of €26,679. Earlybird backers who pledge ¥19,000 (about €127) will receive a pair of 4400s if the campaign is successful, which is around 30 percent less than the retail price. The new 4400s have a slightly improved design, according to Phonon, which is lighter and more durable than the originals. Other rewards are open through the Kickstarter, such as reduced prices on the brand's SMB-02 headphones. The campaign has until June 28th to reach its target. If successful, backers can expect delivery in December this year. See Phonon's Instagram launch of the 4400 Kickstarter.
