  • Czech synth company Vector has created a new granular synth. The Tempera is an experimental, exploratory hardware instrument that records sound and then chops it up into tiny pieces of audio, or "grains". These are then processed, modulated and played back via its eight-by-eight touch-grid. Granular synthesis, which blends sampling and tone processing, is experiencing a wave of popularity as synth-makers search for novel ways to create sound. Tempura has 16 voices of stereo polyphony with a discrete filter per voice, and 8GB of internal storage. It samples audio at 16 bit either via an inbuilt microphone or an instrument-level line in. It can also resample what it plays, allowing you to rapidly move from a piece of sampled audio to something creative and new. Vector is a relative newcomer to the synth market, with only one previous product. The first run of the new synth sold out rapidly so if you order the Tempera now, they expect delivery early 2024. The Tempera is available to order now for €804, including VAT.
