  • US start-up Chompi Club has revealed a new chromatic sampler and tape-music instrument. CHOMPI is a highly portable sampler that incorporates a mic for capturing sounds, plus a tape looper and multiple FX. With big, blocky controls, a non-traditional workflow and up to six hours of sample time, Chompi Club say it has been designed to open up the world of sound design to a broader and more diverse audience. The instrument can play up to seven sounds at once and has 14 slots to save and recall samples. Its stereo tape looping engine was designed to make it easy to snatch sounds and loop them on the fly, with one knob that controls scrubbing, playback speed and direction. It has USB-C connectivity, two filters, tape saturation and a granular delay. According to Chompi Club, the synth's UX contains additional easter eggs that can be discovered by playing around and experimenting. The company was set up by Chelsea and Tobias Hendrickson, who have been running modular synth education classes for around a decade. 5 percent of the proceeds from the new sampler will go to fund education projects and donations of instruments to disadvantaged communities. CHOMPI is initially being sold via Kickstarter, priced $499. The campaign launches on March 28th. After that it will be $599. The first units ship in November.
