  • Dave Hill, founder of audio tech firm Crane Song, has died aged 68. Hill's death was announced by John D. Harris of 58th Street Studios on Facebook yesterday, March 2nd. Hill died on February 22nd, following cancer-related complications, according to an obituary. "It's with a heavy heart that we must share the passing of Dave Hill," the post read. "He was a one-of-a-kind inventor and designer. He will have a profound impact on the way sound is recorded for many years to come." It continued: "All those who knew him know that he was giving of his knowledge and expertise. We know that all of us will miss him greatly. His designs and technology were constantly evolving. To that end he was working with two individuals that he has hand-picked to eventually carry on his legacy, and now that time has come far too early." Born in Superior, Wisconsin, Hill was a self-taught electronics prodigy who started out experimenting with radios and analogue synthesisers before doing live sound for a touring rock band. He then took an electronics degree and founded Crane Song in 1995. Under his guidance, the company has become a globally renowned creator of analogue and digital high-end recording equipment.
