- Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space of All Possibilities is "the record teenage me wanted to make," the UK artist said.
James Holden has announced Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space of All Possibilities, his first album in more than five years.
Out on March 31st via Border Community, Holden's fourth studio album departs from the live band music of his previous output in favour of something more introspective. Spanning 12 tracks, the LP plays out like a continuous sound collage, juxtaposing contrasting audio worlds.
"I wanted this to be my most open record, uncynical, naive, unguarded, the record teenage me wanted to make," he said. "I used to balance my clock radio on a wardrobe to catch the faint pirate FM signals from the nearest city, dreaming of what raves would be like when I could finally escape and become a New Age traveller."
The album comes with a 12-page comic booklet, drawn by Amsterdam-based illustrator and musician Jorge Velez, to help flesh out the visual component of Holden's immersive fantasy world.
The first single, "Contains Multitudes," is a ten-minute synth and tabla creation inspired by the collages of John Stezaker, "where things collide and it feels like it opens a window into them," Holden said. He will perform at London venue EartH on April 13th.
Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space of All Possibilities is Holden's first album since the acclaimed The Animal Spirits in 2017. In the years since, he's scored the documentary A Cambodian Spring, collaborated with Polish Jazz musician Wacław Zimpel and remixed Depeche Mode.
