  • A new compilation called WOMAN, LIFE, FREEDOM exclusively features tracks by Iranian women. Out on January 20th through new label Apranik Records, the digital release spans 12 cuts of electro, techno, breaks, ambient and experimental. Curators and label founders AIDA and Nesa Azadikhah contribute alongside the likes of Meshcut, XEEN, Golbon Moltaji and Sharona Lico. "Throughout Iranian history, women have been at the forefront of music and performing arts," wrote the curators. "However, in the past 44 years under the Islamic regime, women in Iran have been banned from singing, dancing, and performance [...] Despite this, Iranian women have remained active and at the forefront of their art, pushing boundaries from Iran and different corners of the world." WOMAN, LIFE, FREEDOM is dedicated to the recent wave of uprisings in Iran. Following the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in September, millions of people took to the streets to protest, resulting in countless arrests, injuries and deaths. The unrest has had a profound impact on the Iranian music community at home and abroad. The profits from WOMAN, LIFE, FREEDOM will go to an Iranian charity helping displaced women and children struggling with abuse, domestic violence, homelessness and addiction. Listen to two tracks from the compilation.
