  • Japanese audio company Audio-Technica is producing another edition of its Sound Burger record player, first released in 1983. The new edition follows a limited re-release in November, when the company produced 7,000 Sound Burgers to celebrate its 60th birthday. That run apparently sold out in just a couple of days, prompting plans for a 2023 edition. The new Sound Burger will have a number of updates on the original, including a rechargeable battery, a minijack audio output and Bluetooth connectivity for cable-free vinyl sessions. It can play 7-inches and 12-inches at 33 and 45 RPM. Audio-Technica was set up in Japan in 1962 as a cartridge and stylus company. It created several innovations in the industry before the arrival of CDs threatened to put the firm out of business. It endured by branching off into headphone design and sushi-making machines, but it never totally gave up on vinyl, and is now enjoying the fruits of the vinyl revival. No release date has been set for the latest Sound Burger, though Audio-Technica has hinted that more colours will be available than the 2022 version (which only came in red), and that they intend to produce larger numbers than last year. Expect a price around of £200 / €229. Watch a video on how to use the Sound Burger.
