  • Dino Calvao, a New York DJ and longtime fixture in the city's club community, has died. A regular at New York parties since the late '70s, Calvao was cherished for his constant support of local nightlife, comprehensive knowledge of music history and love for dance culture. He passed away on January 4th from a heart attack at the age of 63, according to his son, who confirmed the news with Resident Advisor. A familiar face at several venues around the city, including Good Room in Brooklyn where he has DJ'd, the party personality was also resident caretaker of an ongoing art exhibition at Manhattan gallery The Lower Draw. He started DJing at the age of 18, starting his professional career in the early '80s at the now-defunct Cat Club. Veterans of the scene have long respected his skills behind the decks, though it was his continual presence at various parties and encouragement of emerging and established acts that won him fans across the underground club community. For more details on Calvao's life, revisit this 2016 interview with Good Room where he discusses partying at Studio 54, Limelight and other New York institutions, including a legendary night at Infinity in 1978 with Jim Burgess that ended in a huge fire.
