  • A new version of Matt Anniss's book Join the Future: Bleep Techno and the Birth of British Bass Music is on the way. On sale from January 7th, 2023 via Velocity Press, the updated and expanded edition boasts more interviews, sharpened analysis, a new chapter and an updated recommended-listening list. Speaking to Resident Advisor, Anniss cited the chance to "include contributions from some of the DJs and producers who, for a variety of reasons, I didn't get a chance to speak to first time around," as the primary reason for releasing an updated version. "I've subtly extended some chapters, corrected a few small errors, added more footnotes and enhanced my analysis," he added. "I would say that the argument I put forward is now stronger and I've definitely been bolder in my criticisms of some of the journalists and authors who crafted the narratives of UK dance music history that I challenge in [the original edition of] Join The Future." Anniss says the new chapter, titled Afterword, is the biggest addition. It examines what has changed since Join The Future was first published in 2019, and assesses how dance music could be better researched and documented moving forward. "Things are changing for the better, with the contributions of marginalised groups rightly being brought to the fore, but there is still more work to be done in the months and years ahead," he said. Anniss will go on tour in the UK and beyond in February, taking part in a series of discussion events hosted by journalists, DJs and producers. Confirmed stops include Bristol, Birmingham, London, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Amsterdam. Join The Future explored the impact of bleep techno and its subsequent influence on UK bass music and the wider dance music scene.
