  • 718 Sessions, a quintessential New York dance music gathering, is officially 20 years old. To commemorate the milestone, cofounder Danny Krivit, Toribio of Conclave and Ninja Tune affiliate Seven Davis Jr will be spinning at Brooklyn venue Good Room this Sunday, December 4th from 6 PM until late. Since debuting in October 2002, the monthly festivity, named after a New York area code, has focused on deep house, disco, jazz and other soulful styles, always taking place on Sunday evenings in an effort to draw a diverse, music-oriented crowd. Started by veteran promoter Benny Soto and Krivit, who is one-third of Body & SOUL alongside Francois K and Joe Claussell, 718 Sessions encompasses a boat party as well as a club night. Speaking to Resident Advisor, Soto and Krivit described the challenges of running a consistent event in New York's competitive nightlife landscape. "Moving around from club to club is always stressful," they said, noting how they've seen "spaces come and go" over the years. They attribute their success to their community, explaining how the festivity has grown organically, mostly through word of mouth, with several regulars attending since the very beginning. "People come to 718 Sessions to see each other and dance, hug, catch up," they said. "There is a lot of love out there on the dance floor," Soto observed. "A lot of long-term friendships, marriages and new people constantly meeting." These days, "we see a whole new generation attending the party and we love it." Krivit added: "This is a truly New York party and no matter what great party I'm playing at around the world, I can't wait to get back to 718 Sessions."
