  • Legendary experimental artist William Basinski will play a rare live show at Sage Gateshead in Newcastle on Friday, November 4th. Curated by local artist Man Power, the event is a celebration of the culture and identity of the North East. Basinski will perform his 2020 record Lamentations, while Man Power, performing under his Bed Wetter alias, debuts an electro-symphonic work called NXS8. Tom Ravenscroft will also DJ. NXS8 was written with English composer Fiona Brice and will be performed with Gateshead-based orchestra The Royal Northern Sinfonia. The show will include footage capturing the spirit of the North East, filmed by several local young filmmakers. During a stint at Sage Gateshead as an artist in residence, Man Power wrote a piece focused on "the people of Birtley, a working-class community in the North East of England," he told Resident Advisor, "which now owes its existence to the Japanese Komatsu digging machine factory that dominates the town." The result is NXS8, a piece he describes as "truly North Eastern." He added: "It also represents a unique moment of progress, where a member of the UK's acid house community has been accepted by a world-class arts organisation and invited to create a new work purely on the merit of their experiences within dance music culture."
