  • Leipzig club Neue Welt has changed its name to Neue Welle less than a year since opening. The previous name, which means "new world" in German, "cannot be separated from the context of colonisation," the club said via Instagram. After someone informed the team of the connotation, the club sought advice and began a period of research and reflection. "We are now aware that the term stands for conquest, dispossession, expulsion and genocide and therefore our previous name trivialises them," the team wrote. "This was never our intention." The term "new world" is still often used in a historical context, particularly to describe the voyages of Christopher Columbus and the European colonisation of the Americas, which heaped devastation on countless indigenous communities. As such, many now consider its use problematic. The club's new name means "new wave" in German. Next up in September is Heatwave on the 9th (L.F.T., Rekorder, RA's own Chloe Lula) and Dinner w/ Celina on the 16th (Celina, eves120, jewelry). Read the full statement.
