  • Bali-based duo Gabber Modus Operandi (GMO) have suspended all activities, including a tour of Canada, while they take steps to address an accusation of sexual violence. In a statement on Instagram, Kasimyn and Ican Harem confirmed that one of the group has been accused without mentioning who or what happened. Though the alleged incident took place in 2019, details only came to light on August 9th, 2022, when the alleged victim tweeted, and then deleted, the allegation. In the statement, GMO said they first learned of the allegation on August 13th. "With great regret, we haven't been able to fully explain the allegations in our efforts to protect the victim because, to this day, the alleged victim hasn't submitted a complaint report to us," the statement continued. "However, we assume full responsibility for any consequences caused by such events." After hearing the allegation earlier this month, GMO attempted to contact the alleged victim to obtain more information. They also reached out to intermediaries who knew the alleged victim and alleged perpetrator. But, according to the statement, neither attempt succeeded. GMO has also appointed a professional mediator, legal consultant Ditta Wisnu, to conduct an independent investigation. "GMO will be bound and fully committed to the findings and recommendations made by the mediator," the statement continued. "The mediator is bound under oath and ethics, registered in the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia." The investigation began on August 25th and will continue until September 1st. During that time, GMO said it has suspended "activities," including an appearance at MUTEK Montreal last weekend, "as a means of rehabilitation and deep reflection for all members." Read the full statement. We will update this story as it unfolds.
