  • Uganda's Nyege Nyege Festival returns in-person this September after a two-year hiatus. Running from September 15th through 18th, this year's seventh edition will take place at a new site on the banks of the River Nile: Itanda Falls. The site is five times the size of its previous home. As always, the musical programme will focus primarily on African artists, with slots for Ghanaian-Nigerian singer Adomaa, Kenyan pop star Kabeaushé and Nigerian rapper MC Aunty Rayzor. On an electronic tip, Kampire, MC Yallah, Otim Alpha, Phatstoki, DJ Travella and kuduro pioneer DJ Znobia—who will be performing outside Angola for the first time in 15 years—are among the highlights. Several acts will make the trip from Europe and the US, including Juliana Huxtable, DJ Paypal, DJ Marcelle, Zoë Mc Pherson and Low Jack. In total, around 300 artists will perform across seven stages. Alongside the music, Nyege Nyege will showcase visual art installations, offer activities such as rafting and bungee jumping in partnership with ADRIFT, and ramp up its sustainability practices by planting bamboo and exploring the benefits of mushrooms alongside the African Center for Radical Mycology. The festival will also offer visitors a luxury camping experience in a new area called Nyegeville, which includes hot showers, yoga classes, lockers and a private beach. During the pandemic, Nyege Nyege hosted a 96-hour digital festival in 2020 and hosted events at clubs and festivals across Europe. Find out more about this year's edition via the website. The full lineup is in the event listing below. Revisit our Ten Key Performances feature on the 2020 edition, plus this deep dive into the festival and East Africa's new wave from 2017.
