  • Acclaimed composer Nils Frahm is releasing his first new material in four years. Spanning ten tracks of classical, contemporary and ambient soundscapes that run for three hours, Music For Animals arrives via Frahm's own label, LEITER, on September 23rd. Recorded at his Berlin studio, the album documents Frahm's experience of solitude during the pandemic. "Nothing was happening," he recalls, "and I felt like this was a special time which needed a special kind of music. "My constant inspiration," Frahm continues, "was something as mesmerizing as watching a great waterfall or the leaves on a tree in a storm... Some people like watching the leaves rustle and the branches move. This record is for them." Notably, there is no piano on the album. It's also the first time the artist collaborated with his wife. "One day, she brought a picnic over to the studio, and we opened a bottle of wine, then I showed her my new instrument, a glass harmonica," Frahm describes. "When she tried playing it, it sounded amazing, and I recorded that first interaction." Music For Animals is his first new material since 2018’s All Melody and his first full-length solo album for his label LEITER, which he co-founded last year with his manager, Felix Grimm. It follows his 2021 album, Graz, on Erased Tape Records. For more on the prolific composer, revisit our 2015 feature. Listen to "Right Right Right."
