  • IKEA is releasing its first turntable since 1973. The record player, slated for release this fall, is part of the furniture brand's new OBEGRÄNSAD home audio collection that was designed with Swedish House Mafia. The USB-powered turntable comes with a built-in pre-amplifier, RCA ports, needle and a replaceable cartridge. It can be connected to standard speakers or other sound systems with an adapter. Back in 2018, IKEA first announced plans to release a turntable as part of its FREKVENS collection with Teenage Engineering but that failed to materialize due to manufacturing challenges. "In the previous project, we tried giving a specific design to all parts," IKEA Product Design Engineer Carmen Stoicescu said in a statement. "But with OBEGRÄNSAD, we tried to limit the molds. We wanted to make it simple, mechanical." The OBEGRÄNSAD player was created with affordability in mind but its price hasn't been revealed yet. The goal was to "make something so simple, so accessible, and sort of plug-and-play that you could basically buy it as a gift for anyone who enjoys music”, said IKEA designer Friso Wiersma. Other items in the OBEGRÄNSAD line, unveiled at Milan's recent Design Week, include a production desk with built-in speaker stands and an armchair. In 1973, IKEA launched a piano, stereo system, amplifiers and a record player as part of its debut music hardware collection.
