  • A new one-day festival arrives in Beirut this weekend. A collaboration between local collective Frequent Defect and Palestine's Exist Festival, Orchestrated Diversions takes place at Mkalles Warehouse, located outside of the city centre, this Saturday, June 4th. A mix of DJ sets and live performances are on tap. Beirut talents june as, h.w.g.a. and rayane will be hitting the decks alongside San Francisco's Dao, Exist cofounder Odai Masri (AKA ODDZ) and more. On a live tip, expect sets from the likes of Palestinian hip-hop favourite Muqata, Beirut composer Jad Atoui, Cairo's Aya Metwalli and Renata, who will be performing live for the first time. "In context, it's absurd how hard it usually is to get ourselves to come together and collaborate even though we share the same imposed borders from each side," Exist and Frequent Defect said in a statement. "We have longed for a meet-up while constantly faced with restrictions [...] This collaboration is also a statement that regardless of these and other imposed barriers, we will be able to gather and assemble and work ahead." Exist Festival was launched in 2019 to build bridges between Palestinian musicians, promoters and label managers from around the world. Founded by Renata, Patrik Abi Abdallah and Joseph Junior Sfeir, Frequent Defect has hosted the likes of Juliana Huxtable, E-Saggila and Via App in Beirut. Orchestrated Diversions will run from 5 PM through 8 AM. Here are some photos of the venue.
Correction, June 1st: A previous version of this article got the festival's start and end times wrong. It starts at 5 PM and ends at 8 AM. Correction, June 1st: A previous version of this article said Renata was the sole organiser of Frequent Defect. In fact, she founded the collective with Patrik Abi Abdallah and Joseph Junior Sfeir.
