  • Lakuti is now an official Panorama Bar resident. Announcing the news via an Instagram post today, May 18th, the Uzuri Recordings label boss said her bookings will now be handled by Berghain's in-house agency, Ostgut Booking. In the post, she described how impactful the news is not just for her decades-spanning career but also her community. Acknowledging her family roots in Soweto, a township in Johannesburg, the artist said she hopes "this achievement encourages kids in Soweto and every other townships, kids in Brazil, Detroit and beyond, that their contribution matters and they have something to offer." She went on to raise the topic of ageism in the dance music industry, saying "I hope this also encourages Black women in their 40s and beyond that they too matter and their creativity is an asset." Going forward, she said she hopes "to see more people like myself, a Black and queer African woman in their 40s ++, being given these opportunities." Lakuti and Tama Sumo recently launched the event series Bring Down the Walls and Your Love at Panorama Bar, bringing in artists from Black and LGBTQ+ communities. In 2020, Lakuti also launched her Bring Down the Walls radio show on Universal Rhythms, which spotlights emerging talents.
